Dorothy proclaimed at the end of the Wizard of Oz that what she really sought was right here at home. Starting out playing electric guitar on Rock songs and Surf instrumentals with my brother on drums and then in a basement band with school friends, I followed a path into Country Blues and Bluegrass, Hawaiian slack key and steel guitar, global flavors like Bossa Nova and Indian lap slide. Studying Ethnomusicology, I broadened my encounter with world styles but found I was drawn to research and writing about music closer to my home places: the Country Blues mandolin performance of Yank Rachell, the enjoyable noise shared by beginning Garage Bands in the basement practice spaces of suburbia. ~ Peter Roller
